You know as parents we'd do anything for our children. In this next story we show the lengths that a mom has to go through to give her unborn baby life. She got devastating news almost halfway through her pregnancy that without a critical procedure her baby could die.
Kami Bennet is a happy, vibrant little girl celebrating her first birthday.
"Show them you're one"
But what a journey that goes back before Kami was even born at 18 weeks into her pregnancy, doctors told Kami's mom that Kami had fetal amenia and if not treated she would die before she was even born. The treatment, not easy, fetal blood transfusion where doctors stick a needle in mom's belly and inject blood into the umbilical cord giving the baby blood to survive.
"There were a couple times where we were in the middle of a transfusion and we thought this is it, we thought for sure we weren't going to walk away with a baby."
Teri went through this every two weeks for a total of nine transfusions. Dr. David Fox at Riverside Maternal Fetal Medicine helped lead a team of doctors through the procedures.
"While it can be scary, we can actually see the needle going into the vein and we can actually see blood going in through the needle so we can watch where we are going at all times and we can actually watch the transfusion happening."
And here's a look at it. The color shows blood flow into the baby and you can see the needle in there going into the umbilical cord.
"This is not an easy thing for parents to go through but it is one of the supreme sacrifices that moms make before their child is even born to save their pregnancy."
Now on her first birthday, Kami gets to say hello to the docs that helped save her life.
